Our Story
Founded on February 21st, 2024, the Center for Budget and Macroeconomic Transparency (CBMT) emerged as a beacon of transparency and accountability within The Gambia’s economic landscape. With a commitment to fostering inclusive budgeting and economic development, CBMT was established as a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting budget and macroeconomic research and transparency as well as proactive citizen engagement in budget processes and macroeconomic structures across the nation.
Since its inception, CBMT has been steadfast in its mission to increase awareness, promote effective public participation in budgetary and macroeconomic affairs as well as inclusive growth. Through rigorous research, advocacy, and educational initiatives, CBMT strives to empower citizens, policymakers, and stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to contribute meaningfully to The Gambia’s economic progress.
Driven by its vision of a society where every individual comprehends and engages with fiscal and macroeconomic matters, CBMT continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the discourse surrounding economic policy making and governance. By advocating for greater transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and accessibility, CBMT remains at the forefront of efforts to build a more equitable and prosperous future for all Gambians.

Lamin dibba
Lamin Dibba - The Head and Founder I
Lamin holds a Master’s degree in Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from two renowned universities in Turkey. During his master’s studies, he served as a teaching assistant in econometric data analysis, and research philosophies & methods.
Following his master’s studies, he interned at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs (MoFEA) of The Gambia for nearly five months, after which he worked as an economist at Gambia Participates, a civil society organization. Among other things, at Gambia Participates, he conducted the 2023 Open Budget Survey (OBS) for The Gambia with the International Budget Partnership (IBP), as well as a full survey of the participatory budgeting process of one of the prominent local government councils in The Gambia, Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), with Transparency International (TI); he trained the National Assembly Members of The Gambia on effective public participation in budget processes, and he also conducted a series of training on gender responsive budgeting. In an effort to strengthen participatory budgeting, Lamin has written and published a handbook explaining The Gambia’s entire central government budget process.
Lamin has also lectured in Economics, Economic research methods and Management research methods at the University of The Gambia (UTG); he has been an adjunct lecturer at UTG for 3 semesters now.

Yahya Sonko
Yahya Sonko - Deputy Head and Founder II
Yahya Sonko, a dynamic individual with a diverse academic and professional background, began his academic journey in The Gambia where he completed his Senior Secondary School. After high school, he worked as a Direct Sales Agent (DSA) at Reliance Financial Services Co. Ltd for 8 months.
Pursuing his thirst for knowledge, he travelled to Turkey where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University (BAIBU). During his time at BAIBU, he served as President of the African Students Union. Being one of the best students of his department, he also got the rare opportunity to be an exchange program student at Lodz University in Poland and an Erasmus intern at Malmö University in Sweden. Following the completion of his Bachelor’s degree, he went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Economics from Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul as well as a Master’s degree at Tampere University in Finland, both of which he completed successfully.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Yahya is an accomplished author, having published four books on African storytelling, reflecting his dedication to preserving African culture.

Naffie Gaye
Naffie Gaye - Secretary
Naffie is a very diligent individual; she is steadfast, creative, and goal-oriented. She completed her senior secondary education at Nusrat Senior Secondary School, which is among the top high schools in The Gambia. At high school, she studied Commerce (a field which comprises core subjects such as Economics, Accounting, Business Management, Commerce, Mathematics etc.) after which she went to University of The Gambia (UTG) to pursue a Bachelor’s degree. Currently, she is in her final year at UTG studying Economics.
In spite of her intensive course work, Naffie has completed a nearly three-month internship program on career and counseling at the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC). She has also worked as a script checker for West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), The Gambia, for over two years.
In addition to becoming a teacher at Mama Maltide Nursery School, she has attended “Future Start Now Gambia Technological Institute” to expand her knowledge of information technology.

Arokey Touray
Arokey Touray - Treasurer
Arokey is an experienced teller who has worked at Fs_enterprise Bureau, The Gambia, for over a year. She has administered financial transactions, done book keeping and financial reporting, amongst other tasks. Arokey has a keen eye for detail and is good with numbers, which has led her to pursue a career in Banking and Finance.
She has obtained a National Diploma in Banking and Finance from the school of Business Administration in Management Development institute (MDI), The Gambia. She is also in her last semester for her Higher National Diploma in Banking and Finance at MDI.
Aside from being an experienced teller, Arokey is also an environmentalist, and she has participated in several environmental cleaning activities.

Banna Sabally - Digital Media Advisor (PRO)
Banna is a seasoned journalist who has been in the field of journalism and public relations for an extended period of time. Aside from being an exceptional Journalist, she is a communication strategist, a women rights advocate and a climate advocate.
Banna is also a trainer of aspiring journalists at the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication – MAJaC, The Gambia. She is a proactive advocate for inclusive growth and development.
